“Piel de sapo” Melon
The most important variety of melon grown in Castilla-La Mancha is called Piel de Sapo, included within the family of Spanish type green melons. These melons have an ellipsoidal or ovoid size, with uniform fruit weighing between 2 and 3 kg.
The thin crust is usually smooth or slightly rough. It has longitudinal furrows of different intensity, usually more abundant near the area of the pistil scar. The skin is green with medium sized dark spots, evenly distributed, turning at maturity towards yellow. However, the “bed”, or contact area with the ground, where fruit is not receiving sunlight, is always yellowish due to lack of chlorophyll formation.
The pulp, slightly fibrous, is white or cream, compact, crisp, with sweetness ranging between 12-15 ° brix and juiciness.
Crispy and juicy snack.
Very sweet when eaten.
